Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3587

Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah says: I asked Abu al-Zubayr: Did you hear Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) mention that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not sleep until he had recited "Alif Lam Mim. The revelation" [Surah al-Sajdah: 1-2] and "Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion" [Surah al-Mulk: 1]? Abu al-Zubayr said: Safwan, or Abu Safwan, narrated it to me.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it, because it revolves around the narration of Layth bin Abi Sulaym from Abu al-Zubayr.

Grading: Its chain is "sahih", provided that Abu al-Zubayr's teacher is "Safwan bin Abd Allah al-Jumahi al-Makki", as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar inclined in "al-Isabah" (4096), where he says: The most likely is that he is Safwan bin Abd Allah, who narrates from Umm al-Darda', and he is a Tabi'i. Then he expressed doubt about his identification and said in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (3/ 267): What appears to me is that the narrator of this hadith is someone other than Safwan bin Abd Allah, because of Abu al-Zubayr's hesitation. And he said in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (2724): He is unknown.
Important point: We say: the narrator who hesitated and doubted is "Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah", as is explicitly stated in al-Khara'iti's "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (990), whereas Abu al-Zubayr's narration from Safwan bin Abd Allah al-Jumahi is well known, and he is "thiqah".
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Nasa'i (10477) through al-Hasan bin A'yan, from Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (23/ 14659), al-Tirmidhi (2892 and 3404) and al-Nasa'i (10475) via Layth bin Abi Sulaym, and by al-Nasa'i (10474) via al-Mughirah bin Muslim al-Khurasani, both from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, dropping the intermediary between Abu al-Zubayr and Jabir. Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (13/ 3219): The version of Zuhayr seems closer to what is correct (sawab) than the version of Layth and those who followed him.
