It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he recited this saying of Luqman (peace be upon him) to his son: "And be moderate in your walk and lower your voice" [Surah Luqman: 19], and said: "Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out, the Companions would walk ahead of him (peace and blessings be upon him) and leave the space behind his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed back empty for the angels."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih", except for its opening part, which mentions Luqman and his saying to his son.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because "Ibrahim bin Abi al-Layth" is alone in narrating it, and he is not that strong.
Note / Clarification: Al-Ashja'i is Ubayd Allah bin Ubayd al-Rahman, and Sufyan is Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Zuhd" (301) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hafiz, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded without its opening part by Ahmad (22/ 14236 and 14556), Ibn Majah (246), Ibn Hibban (6312), and the author (al-Hakim) later at number (7945), through several routes from Sufyan al-Thawri.
Details of the narration: The story of the Companions walking in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and leaving his back free for the angels was narrated by Abu Awanah from al-Aswad bin Qays within a long hadith found in Musnad Ahmad (23/ 15281). And this narration will come with the author later at number (7273), but its full wording is not given there.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Khalid bin al-Harith differed in narrating it via Shu'bah from al-Aswad (which will come at 7946): he mentioned it as marfu' with the wording: "Do not walk in front of me nor behind me", thus mentioning the prohibition of walking in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him); and this narration is "shadh".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from Abd Allah bin Amr, which will come with the author later at (7937), and its chain is "hasan".
