It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) came to his people and ordered them (to pay) zakah, Qarun gathered the people and said to them: "He (Musa (peace be upon him)) came to you with the prayer and other commands, and you bore them all; will you now also bear his taking your wealth from you?" The people said: "We cannot bear to give away our wealth; what is your opinion?" He said: "My opinion is that we send word to an immoral woman of the Children of Israel that she should accuse him (Musa (peace be upon him)) of having tried to seduce her." (After this conspiracy) Musa (peace be upon him) supplicated to Allah against them, and Allah commanded the earth to obey him. Musa (peace be upon him) said to the earth: "Seize them," and the earth gripped them up to their ankles. They began to cry out: "O Musa! O Musa! (Save us!)" Then he said to the earth: "Seize them," and the earth seized them up to their knees. Again they began to cry out: "O Musa! O Musa!" Then he said to the earth: "Seize them," and the earth pressed them in up to their necks. Again they pleaded: "O Musa! O Musa!" Then he said to the earth: "Seize them," and the earth sank in with them and made them disappear completely. Then Allah Almighty revealed to Musa (peace be upon him): "O Musa! My servants asked you and humbled themselves before you, but you did not answer them. By My Might! Had they called upon Me (instead of you), I would certainly have answered them." Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: This is the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "So We caused the earth to swallow him and his home" [Surah al-Qasas: 81], that is, He sank him, layer upon layer, down to the lowest earth.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The word "أبو" has dropped out of the manuscripts.
Grading: It is "da'if" because of "idtirab" (inconsistency). Note / Clarification: Ishaq is Ibn Rahawayh, Abu Mu'awiyah is Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir, al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran, and Abd Allah bin al-Harith is Ibn Nawfal al-Hashimi. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (61/ 97-98) through Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-Utaridi, from Abu Mu'awiyah, from al-A'mash, from al-Minhal bin Amr, from Sa'id bin Jubayr and Abd Allah bin al-Harith, from Ibn Abbas. Thus he combined Sa'id and Abd Allah bin al-Harith. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (1/ 447-449) through Jabir bin Nuh, Yahya bin Isa al-Ramli and Ali bin Hashim bin al-Barid, all three from al-A'mash, from al-Minhal bin Amr. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Then they differed: Jabir bin Nuh made it al-Minhal from Abd Allah bin al-Harith from Ibn Abbas (dropping Sa'id bin Jubayr); Yahya al-Ramli made it al-Minhal from a man from Ibn Abbas (leaving the intermediary unnamed); and Ibn al-Barid made it al-Minhal from Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn Abbas (dropping Abd Allah bin al-Harith). This inconsistency is perhaps from al-Minhal. And Allah knows best. Reference / Source: It was recorded in a similar form by al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (20/ 118-119) and "Tarikh" (1/ 449), Ibn Abi Hatim (9/ 3019) and Ibn Asakir (61/ 96-97) through Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Duba'i, from Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Abd Allah bin al-Harith, as his own statement, without mentioning Ibn Abbas in it. And Ali bin Zayd has "weakness".
