It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "Then one of the two women came to him, walking shyly" [Surah al-Qasas: 25], that he said: She came (to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him)) as a woman who went in and out (for her needs), with her hand placed over her face. So Musa (peace be upon him) got up with her and said to her: "Walk behind me and direct me along the road (by calling out from behind), and I will walk in front of you, for we do not look at the backs of women." Then that daughter said (to her father): "O my father, hire him; indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy" [Surah al-Qasas: 26]. She said this because of the strength she had seen in him and because of the modest words he had said to her. This increased her father's inclination towards Musa (peace be upon him), so he said: "I wish to marry you to one of these two daughters of mine on the condition that you work for me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be (a favour) from you. I do not wish to put you in hardship. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the righteous" [Surah al-Qasas: 27], that is, you will find me righteous (in good companionship and in keeping my word). Musa (peace be upon him) said: "That is (agreed) between me and you; whichever of the two terms I complete, there will be no injustice to me" [Surah al-Qasas: 28]. He said: Yes. (Musa (peace be upon him)) said: "And Allah is Guardian over what we say" [Surah al-Qasas: 28]. Then he married him (to his daughter), and Musa (peace be upon him) stayed with him, managing his affairs and grazing his goats. He was married to Safurah or to her sister Sharqa, and these were the two who had been holding back (their flocks at the well).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
