It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "Whoever comes with a good deed" [Surah al-Naml: 89], that he said: What is meant is the one who comes with "La ilaha illallah" (There is no god but Allah); and "whoever comes with an evil deed" [Surah al-Naml: 90] means shirk (associating partners with Allah).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This report is "sahih", but this particular chain is "munqati'" (broken): the narrator "Jami' bin Shaddad" has dropped out of it between al-A'mash and al-Hasan bin Ubayd Allah on one side and al-Aswad bin Hilal on the other. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The one who erred in it is "Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-Utaridi", who is not that precise (dabit) a narrator; however, all its other narrators are "thiqah". Reference / Source: It was narrated by Sufyan bin Waki' and Ya'qub bin Ibrahim al-Dawraqi in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (8/ 108), and by Ibn Abi Shaybah in al-Tabarani's "al-Du'a'" (1502). All three of them, narrating from Hafs bin Ghiyath with this chain, reported it as "mawsul" (connected) by mentioning "Jami' bin Shaddad", and Jami' is "thiqah". Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabari (8/ 108), Ibn Abi Hatim (5/ 1431 and 9/ 2934), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (9/ 43) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (203), through several routes from al-Hasan bin Ubayd Allah al-Nakha'i alone. And they confined themselves to its first part only.
