Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3569

It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said this (about those slain at Badr): "They certainly know now that what I used to tell them in the world is the truth," whereas Allah Almighty has said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Indeed, you cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn their backs and depart" [Surah al-Naml: 80].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bukhari (1371) from Abd Allah bin Muhammad (Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah), from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, with this chain. Al-Hakim's istidrak is an "oversight" (dhuhul) on his part.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (9/ 4958), al-Bukhari (3979, 3981), Muslim (932-26) and al-Nasa'i (2214) through two routes from Hisham bin Urwah.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ahmad (8/ 4864) through Yahya bin Abd al-Rahman bin Hatib, from A'ishah.

Note / Clarification: See the narration that comes later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (5065).
Note / Clarification: A'ishah's statement in this hadith, "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) only said", is in fact a rebuttal of Ibn Umar, when it was mentioned to her that Ibn Umar narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said about the slain polytheists of Badr (who were thrown into the well): "Indeed, they hear what I am saying." (A'ishah clarified this.) For more detail on this issue, see the annotation on hadith (4864) of "Musnad Ahmad".
