It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "I will surely punish it with a severe punishment" [Surah al-Naml: 21], that he said: (It means) plucking out its feathers. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) further said: Six hundred thousand chairs used to be set out for Sayyiduna Sulayman bin Dawud (peace be upon him). Then the nobles of mankind would come and sit near him, then the nobles of the jinn would come and sit behind the humans. Then he would call the birds and they would shade them (with their wings), then he would command the wind and it would carry them all. He would cover a month's journey in a single morning. Once, while he was travelling through a barren wilderness, the need for water arose. The hoopoe came and began pecking at the ground, and it found the place of the water. Then the devils came and stripped that place open as a hide is stripped, and so they reached the water. Then Nafi' bin al-Azraq asked: O you who stand firm upon the truth! Have you considered the hoopoe, how it pecks the ground and finds the place of water, yet it comes towards the hunter's trap while seeing it, and still gets caught in it by its neck? Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Indeed, when destiny comes, it comes between (a creature) and its sight.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Note / Clarification: Ishaq is Ibn Rahawayh, Abu Mu'awiyah is Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir, and al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (247) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 536) from Abu Mu'awiyah, and by al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" (10/ 409) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (22/ 266-267) through Ahmad bin Umar al-Waki'i, from Abu Mu'awiyah. Note / Clarification: It will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at (4187) through Salm bin Junadah from Abu Mu'awiyah. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabari (19/ 145) through al-Himmani (Jabir bin Nuh) from al-A'mash in very abridged form, confining himself to the words "نتف ريشه" (he plucked its feathers). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Himmani is weak, but he is corroborated (with the author and others). Details of the narration: The story of Sulayman (peace be upon him) sitting was recorded in abridged form by Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 535) and Ibn Asakir (22/ 266) through Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Shayban Dirar bin Murrah, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, as his own statement. In Ibn Asakir it mentions "three hundred thousand chairs". Reference / Source: Similar to the narration of Sa'id bin Jubayr from Ibn Abbas, it was recorded by Ibn Abi Hatim (9/ 2861) through Asbat bin Nasr, from al-Suddi, from Ibn Abbas. Reference / Source: Its second part (the exchange of Nafi' bin al-Azraq with Ibn Abbas) was recorded by Ibn Abi Hatim (9/ 2859) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Qada' wa al-Qadar" (268) through Yusuf bin Mahak, and by Ibn Abi Hatim through Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas; it includes the questioning of Nafi' bin al-Azraq concerning the hoopoe.
