It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the hoopoe used to guide Sayyiduna Sulayman (peace be upon him) (in the search for water). The narrator says: I said: How can that be, when a trap is set for the hoopoe and dust is thrown over it (so why does it not see that trap)? He said (in a stern tone): When the decree (destiny) comes, sight departs (that is, a person becomes blind).

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have "أهتك الله بعض أبيك", which is an error. The correct text is what we have established from "al-Talkhis" and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Qada' wa al-Qadar" (494), and it is likewise in Ibn Asakir's history. Note / Clarification: "al-Han" means the private part. And "ولم يَكْن" means that he mentioned it by its well-known name and did not use an allusion.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "al-Qada' wa al-Qadar" (494), and through him by Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (22/ 267), from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim, with this chain. Also, al-Lalaka'i recorded it in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (4/ 743) through Ishaq bin Rahawayh, from Sulayman bin Harb. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Abd Allah bin Ahmad in "al-Sunnah" (900, 931) and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (9/ 2859) through Usamah bin Zayd, from Ikrimah. See also the next narration.
