Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3536

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not settle women in the upper-storey rooms (from where they can look at people), nor teach them writing; rather, teach them spinning and Surah al-Nur."
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "talif" (ruined). Al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis", objecting to al-Hakim's declaring it sahih, said: "Rather, it is mawdu' (fabricated), and its bane is Abd al-Wahhab, whom Abu Hatim called a kadhdhab (liar)."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2227) through al-Hakim.
Reference / Source: Then al-Bayhaqi, Ibn Hibban, al-Tabarani, al-Tha'labi, al-Khatib, al-Wahidi, al-Baghawi and Ibn al-Jawzi narrated it from Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Shami from Shu'ayb bin Ishaq.
Grading: Its chain is also "talif"; Muhammad bin Ibrahim, like Abd al-Wahhab, is a "kadhdhab" (liar) and "wadda'" (fabricator).
Reference / Source: Something like this hadith of A'ishah is also narrated from Ibn Abbas (without Surat al-Nur); Ibn Adi (al-Kamil: 2/ 152) and Ibn al-Jawzi transmitted it. Its chain is also "talif" and contains a narrator "accused of fabrication". It is also narrated from Mujahid as "mursal": "Teach your men Surat al-Ma'idah and your women Surat al-Nur." Al-Bayhaqi (2205). It is "da'if" because of being "mursal" and because of "lin" (softness) in the chain.
