Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3524

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this statement of Allah Almighty: "Those who are humble in their prayer" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 2], that he said: "Humility (khushu') is in the heart, and it means that you keep your shoulders soft (in prayer) for your fellow Muslim, and that you do not look here and there in your prayer."
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) It is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because what is "mahfuz" from Abu Sinan (al-Shaybani Dirar bin Murrah) is that he left the intermediary between himself and Ali "unnamed" (mubham). Al-Mas'udi (although he became confused) had this narration from him transmitted by those who heard from him before his confusion, and he is also corroborated; therefore the real defect is "the unnamed narrator". And the mention of Ubayd Allah bin Abi Rafi' (the scribe of Ali) in it is not mahfuz.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Muwajjih: Muhammad bin Amr al-Fazari; Abdan: Abd Allah bin Uthman al-Marwazi; Abd Allah: Ibn al-Mubarak.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (2/ 279) narrated it through al-Hakim.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Husayn al-Marwazi narrated from Ibn al-Mubarak in "al-Zuhd" (1148), from al-Mas'udi, from Abu Sinan (the text has Sufyan; the correct form is Sinan) al-Shaybani, "from a man, from Ali", leaving the narrator "unnamed".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Waki' (al-Zuhd: 328) and Khalid bin Abd Allah al-Tahhan (al-Tabari: 18/ 2) corroborated al-Mas'udi on this. Khalid said: "from a man of his people".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And al-Mas'udi was corroborated by Sufyan al-Thawri (Abd al-Razzaq: 2/ 43), who narrated it from Abu Sinan, from a man, from Ali, but without the words "Humility is in the heart".
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi narrated it in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (139) from Amr bin Abi Qays, from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, from a man (whom he named), from Ali (without the mention of softening the shoulder). Amr is "saduq" but has errors.
