Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3525

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed, he would raise his gaze towards the sky. Then, when this verse was revealed: "Those who are humble in their prayer" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 2], he (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered his head.
This hadith would have been sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs, were it not for a disagreement (in the chain) concerning Muhammad bin Sirin, for it has also been reported from him as mursal; and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) It is "da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The "mahfuz" version is that it is narrated from Ibn Sirin as "mursal" (al-Dhahabi declared this correct in al-Talkhis). The father of Abu Shu'ayb al-Harrani (Abu Muslim al-Hasan bin Ahmad) is alone in presenting it as "mawsul"; although he and his son are thiqah, his connecting it is "shadh".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ya'qub al-Dawraqi (a hafiz of hadith) and Sa'id bin Mansur, contradicting him, narrated it from Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah, from Ayyub, from Ibn Sirin as "mursal": "I was informed that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ...". Al-Bayhaqi said: "This is the mahfuz, mursal."
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (2/ 283) transmitted it from al-Hakim and said: "Hammad bin Zayd narrated it from Ayyub as mursal, and this is the mahfuz." (The editors say): We did not find this route of Hammad.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah, Abu Dawud (al-Marasil), al-Tabari, al-Bayhaqi and al-Hazimi narrated it as "mursal" from Abd Allah bin Awn from Ibn Sirin.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Zayd Sa'id bin Aws, contradicting them, narrated it from Abd Allah bin Awn as "mawsul" with the mention of Abu Hurayrah. But the one narrating it from Sa'id is "Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi", who is "extremely weak" (da'if jiddan).
Reference / Source: Khalid al-Hadhdha' also narrated it from Ibn Sirin as "mursal" (al-Tabari: 18/ 2).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari (18/ 2) narrated from Muhammad bin Humayd, through his chain, from Ibn Sirin that "the Companions used to raise their gaze," etc.
Grading: Muhammad bin Humayd and Abu Ja'far al-Razi have been "criticised", so the chain is not strong.
