أخبرنا أحمد بن سهل الفقيه ببُخارَى، حدثنا قيس بن أُنَيف، حدثنا قُتيبة بن سعيد، حدثنا جعفر بن سليمان، عن أبي عِمْران، عن يزيد بن بابَنُوسَ قال: قلنا لعائشة: يا أمَّ المؤمنين، كيف كان خُلُقُ رسولِ الله ﷺ؟ قالت: كان خُلُقُ رسولِ الله ﷺ القرآنَ، ثم قالت تقرأُ سورةَ المؤمنين؟ اقرأْ ﴿قَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ﴾، حتى بَلَغَ العَشْرَ، فقالت: هكذا كان خلقُ رسولِ الله ﷺ (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Yazid bin Babanus that he said: We asked the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): O Mother of the Believers, what was the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) like? She said: The character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was the Qur'an itself. Then she asked: Do you recite Surah al-Mu'minun? Then recite (the first ten verses): "Successful indeed are the believers." When he reached the tenth verse, she said: "This was the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل يزيد بن بابنوس، فهو وإن لم يرو عنه غير أبي عمران الجَوْني فإنه معروف بالرواية عن عائشة، وقال الدارقطني: لا بأس به، وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، وجهّله أبو حاتم، وهو قد توبع على حديثه هذا غير ذكر سورة المؤمنين فلم يتابعه عليه أحد، وجعفر بن سليمان جيد الحديث، وأما قيس بن أُنيف فهو صالح حسن الحديث كما سلف تقريره عند الحديث رقم (3159)، وهو متابع.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan" because of Yazid bin Babanus.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although no one other than Abu Imran al-Jawni narrated from Yazid, he is known for narrating from A'ishah. Al-Daraqutni said "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him), Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and Abu Hatim called him majhul. He was corroborated in the rest of the hadith except for the mention of "Surat al-Mu'minun"; in that mention he has no corroborator. Ja'far bin Sulayman is "jayyid al-hadith", and Qays bin Unayf is "salih" and "hasan al-hadith" (as passed at 3159), and he is corroborated.
فقد أخرجه النسائي (11287) عن قتيبة بن سعيد، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (11287) narrated it from Qutaybah bin Sa'id with this same chain.
ورواه عن عائشة سعدُ بن هشام الأنصاري عند أحمد (40/ 24269)، ومسلم (746)، وأبي داود (1342)، والنسائي (424)، وابن حبان (2551)، وعبدُ الله بن أبي قيس عند أحمد (42/ 25546)، وجبيرُ بن نفير عند النسائي (11073)، ثلاثتهم يذكر: أنه سألها عن خُلُق رسول الله ﷺ، فتقول: القرآن. ولم يذكر أحدٌ سورة المؤمنين.

All three mention that he asked about the character of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and she said: "(His character) was the Qur'an." But none of them mentioned "Surat al-Mu'minun".
