Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3473

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to spend most of his night telling us about the Children of Israel, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would get up only for the major prayer (that is, to perform the obligatory prayer).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) The hadith is "sahih", but as the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both), not as the hadith of 'Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is because Abu Hilal (Muhammad bin Sulaym al-Rasibi) has been criticised specifically in his narration from Qatadah, and narrators far more reliable than him contradicted him and narrated it from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As. The rest of its narrators are "thiqah".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hassan is Muslim bin 'Abdullah al-A'raj.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Abu Hilal, Ahmad (33/ 19990) recorded it from 'Affan (pairing Hasan bin Musa with him), with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad also recorded it (19921) from Bahz bin Asad, from Abu Hilal, with it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hilal was contradicted by Hisham al-Dastuwa'i (Ahmad: 19922, Abu Dawud: 3663) and Sa'id bin Abi Hilal (Ibn Hibban: 6255), who narrated it from Qatadah, from Abu Hassan, from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As, and that is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "لعُظْم صلاة" means: for an obligatory prayer, because the "'uzm" of a thing is its greater part.
