Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3471

حدثنا محمد بن يعقوب الحافظ، حدثنا حامد بن أبي حامد المقرئ، حدثنا عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله الدَّشْتَكي، حدثنا عمرو بن أبي قيس، عن عطاء بن السائب، عن سعيد بن جُبَير، عن ابن عبَّاس في قوله: ﴿يَعْلَمُ السِّرَّ وَأَخْفَى﴾ [طه: 7]، قال: السِّرُّ: ما عَلِمتَه أنت، وأَخفى: ما قَذَفَ اللهُ في قلبك ممّا لم تَعلَمْه (3).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "He knows the secret and what is even more hidden" [Surah Ta Ha: 7]; he said: "The secret" means that (secret) which you know, and "what is even more hidden" means that (hidden matter) which Allah Almighty has placed in your heart but which you do not yet know.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(3) إسناده حسن. وأخرجه الطبري في "تفسيره" 16/ 139 من طريق حكّام بن سلم، عن عمرو بن أبي قيس، بهذا الإسناد.
Grading: (3) Its chain is "hasan".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (16/ 139) via Hakkam bin Salm, from 'Amr bin Abi Qays, with this chain.
وأخرجه أبو الشيخ في "العظمة" (170)، والبيهقي في "الأسماء والصفات" (238) من طريق فضيل بن عياض، عن عطاء، به - بلفظ: يعلم ما تسر في نفسك، ويعلم ما تعمل غدًا.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Shaykh in "al-'Azamah" (170) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (238) recorded it via Fudayl bin 'Iyad, from 'Ata', with it, with the wording: "He knows what you conceal within yourself, and He knows what you will do tomorrow."
