Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In the manuscripts the wording is "كأشدّ الرجال ثم كمشيه", while what we have established (in the text) is from the printed edition, and it is the more sound reading; it agrees with al-Bayhaqi's "al-I'tiqad" (p. 203-204), where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim) with the same chain and text.
Grading: (4) Its chain is "hasan" because of al-Suddi, who is Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Rahman. It will come again, repeated, at no. (8956).
Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi recorded it in "al-Wasit" (3/ 191) from Abu al-Qasim bin Hamdan, from Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Nu'aym al-Hafiz (i.e. al-Hakim himself), with this chain; in his version the wording is "كشدِّ الرجل ثم كمشيه" (like a man's running, then like his walking). Al-Tirmidhi (3159) likewise recorded it from 'Abd bin Humayd, from 'Ubaydullah bin Musa, with it, and said: "A hasan hadith; Shu'bah narrated it from al-Suddi and did not make it marfu'." Then he cited its beginning (3160) via Yahya bin Sa'id and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi from Shu'bah, in which 'Abd al-Rahman said: I said to Shu'bah: Isra'il narrated it to me from al-Suddi, from Murrah, from 'Abdullah, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Shu'bah said: "I too heard it from al-Suddi as marfu', but I deliberately leave it!" Shu'bah's route will come like this with the author at nos. (8957) and (8958).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (7/ 4141) recorded it from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, from Isra'il, with it, as "marfu'".
Note / Clarification: Something similar will come from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as "mawquf" at no. (3464), and within a long hadith at nos. (3465) and (8729), via routes from him other than Murrah al-Hamdani.
Important point: Although this narration is mawquf, such a thing cannot be said from personal "opinion" (so it is marfu' in ruling).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the narration of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come within a long hadith at no. (8951).
Note / Clarification: "يصدرون" means: they will turn back and be saved from it.
Note / Clarification: "حُضْر الفرس" means: the fast running of a horse.
