أخبرني أبو بكر إسماعيل بن محمد الفقيه بالرَّيّ، حدثنا أبو حاتم الرازي، حدثني أبو أيوب سليمان بن عبد الرحمن الدِّمشقي، حدثني عبد الله بن وهب، حدثنا مالك بن خَيْر الزَّبَادي، عن أبي قَبِيل، عن عُقْبة بن عامر قال: سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول: "سيَهْلِكُ من أمَّتي أهلُ الكِتابِ وأهلُ اللَّبَن" قال عقبةُ: ما أهلُ الكتابِ يا رسول الله؟ قال: "قومٌ يتعلَّمون كتابَ الله يُجادِلون به الذين آمَنوا" قال: فقلت: ما أهلُ اللَّبَن يا رسول الله؟ قال: "قومٌ يَتَّبِعون الشَّهَواتِ ويُضيِّعون الصَّلوات" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Soon, from among my Ummah, the 'people of the Book' and the 'people of milk' will perish." Uqbah asked: O Messenger of Allah, what is meant by the people of the Book? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People who will learn the Book of Allah in order to argue (unjustly) with it against those who believe." I said: O Messenger of Allah, what is meant by the people of milk? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People who (leave the towns and go after livestock in the countryside,) follow their desires and neglect the prayers."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل مالك بن خير الزبادي. أبو قَبيل: هو حُيي بن هانئ المَعافري.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan" because of Malik bin Khayr al-Zabadi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Qabil is Huyayy bin Hani' al-Ma'afiri.
وأخرجه بنحوه أحمد (28/ 17318) و (17415) من طريق عبد الله بن لَهِيعة، و (17421) من طريق أبي السَّمح درّاج، كلاهما عن أبي قبيل، به. وابن لهيعة وأبو السمح كلاهما فيهما مقال، لكن رواه عن ابن لهيعة عند أحمدَ أبو عبد الرحمن المقرئ وروايته عنه صالحة.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded something similar (28/ 17318 and 17415) via 'Abdullah bin Lahi'ah, and (17421) via Abu al-Samh Darraj, both from Abu Qabil, with it.
Grading: Both Ibn Lahi'ah and Abu al-Samh have been criticised, but the one narrating from Ibn Lahi'ah in Ahmad is Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri', and his narration from him is "salih" (acceptable).
ولابن لهيعة فيه إسناد آخر عند أحمد (17415) يرويه عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب، عن أبي الخير - وهو مَرثَد بن عبد الله اليَزَني - عن عقبة بن عامر.
Details of the narration: Ibn Lahi'ah has another chain for it in Ahmad (17415): from Yazid bin Abi Habib, from Abu al-Khayr (Marthad bin 'Abdullah al-Yazani), from 'Uqbah bin 'Amir.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan" because of Malik bin Khayr al-Zabadi.
