Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3454

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "And We brought him near for private conversation" [Surah Maryam: 52], that (Sayyiduna Musa, peace be upon him) heard the scratching of the Pen at the time when (the decrees of destiny) were being written on the Preserved Tablet.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym is al-Fadl bin Dukayn, and Sufyan is al-Thawri. Sufyan's hearing from 'Ata' (bin al-Sa'ib) is early, before his ikhtilat (deterioration of memory).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 533), Hannad in "al-Zuhd" (149), 'Abdullah bin Ahmad in "al-Sunnah" (1231), and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (16/ 94) recorded it via several routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
Important point: Something like this cannot be said from personal opinion, so it is "marfu'" in ruling. In the long marfu' hadith of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) about the Mi'raj, in al-Bukhari (349) and Muslim (163), there is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Then I was taken up until I reached a level where I could hear the scratching of the pens."
