Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3451

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "On the Day of Resurrection, all the children of Adam will come with some sin or other upon them, except Yahya bin Zakariyya (peace be upon him)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stretched his hand down towards the ground and picked up a small stick (twig), and said: "That is because what men have (desire) was, in his case, only like this small stick (next to nothing); and that is why Allah named him 'a master', 'chaste' (abstinent) and 'a prophet from among the righteous'."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This report is "mudtarib al-isnad" (its chain is disordered). Although its chain here outwardly appears "hasan" on account of Muhammad bin Ishaq (author of "al-Sirah"), there has been disagreement on Yahya bin Sa'id (al-Ansari) and then on Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as to whether it is marfu' or mawquf, muttasil or mursal (as will come).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The mention of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib explicitly stating that he heard it from 'Amr bin al-'As is questionable, because Abu Zur'ah al-'Iraqi quoted in "Tuhfat al-Tahsil" (p. 128) from Ibn al-Madini that Sa'id did not hear from 'Amr.
Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi recorded it in "al-Wasit" (3/ 177), and via him Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (64/ 174), from Abu al-Qasim bin Abi Nasr al-Judhami, from Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Hamdawayh (i.e. Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim), with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (3/ 255 and 16/ 58) via Salamah bin al-Fadl, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, with it, and it will come via this route with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (7810).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded something similar of its second part in his "Tafsir" (2/ 643) via 'Abbad bin al-'Awwam, from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Ibn al-'As (it is not known whether 'Abdullah or 'Amr), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Grading: Its narrators are "thiqah", and the doubt about the name of its Companion ('Amr or 'Abdullah) does no harm, because both are eminent, upright Companions.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (2351) recorded the first part in meaning via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr as marfu', with the wording: "No one should say: I am better than Yahya bin Zakariyya; he never intended a sin - I think he said: nor did he commit one."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Sa'id al-Qattan and Shu'bah differed, narrating it from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Ibn al-'As (either 'Abdullah or his father), with the first part as his own "mawquf" statement and the second part as a statement of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib. Ahmad recorded it in "al-Zuhd" (463) and Ibn Abi Hatim (2/ 643) via al-Qattan, and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (3/ 255-256) via Shu'bah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Anas bin 'Iyad (who is also thiqah) differed, narrating both parts similarly from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari as a statement of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (maqtu'), not taking it beyond Sa'id. Al-Tabari (3/ 255) recorded it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Qatadah differed, narrating only the first part from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "mursal". 'Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in his "Tafsir" (2/ 6) from Ma'mar from him, and via 'Abd al-Razzaq al-Tabari also recorded it (16/ 58).
Grading: So this report is "mudtarib" (disordered), even though the narrators of these routes are on the whole thiqah. Ibn Abi Hatim ("'Ilal al-Hadith": 1913) mentioned that he asked his father about this hadith narrated by Muhammad bin Ishaq from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, and he said: "They do not narrate this hadith as marfu'."
Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir cited it in his "Tafsir" (2/ 30) via Ibn Abi Hatim from the narrations of 'Abbad bin al-'Awwam and then Yahya al-Qattan, and then commented: "This is mawquf, and it has a stronger chain than the marfu'; indeed the authenticity of the marfu' is doubtful. And Allah knows best."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: We say: however, the first part has a "shahid" (supporting report) from the marfu' hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which will come with the author at no. (4194), but its chain is "da'if". The author also narrated it at this place from al-Hasan al-Basri from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "mursal", and its narrators are "thiqah".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A "marfu'" shahid for both its parts is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ibn Abi Hatim (2/ 644), Ibn 'Adi ("al-Kamil": 2/ 234), al-Tabarani ("al-Awsat": 6556) and Ibn 'Asakir (64/ 194).
Grading: Its chain has "weakness" because of Hajjaj bin Sulayman al-Ru'ayni; his hadiths contain munkar (denounced) narrations, especially from al-Layth bin Sa'd, and this one is from his narration from him. Abu Hatim al-Razi said, as his son quoted from him: "No one had this hadith except al-Hajjaj, and it was not in al-Layth's book; and Hajjaj is a known shaykh."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic it is also narrated from Yahya bin Ja'dah from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as "mursal": "No one should say: I am better than Yahya bin Zakariyya; he never intended a sin, and no woman ever stirred in his heart." Ibn 'Asakir (64/ 191) recorded it, and the narrators of this mursal are "thiqah".
