أخبرنا أبو بكر محمد بن عبد الله الشافعي، حدثنا إسحاق بن الحسن الحَرْبي، حدثنا أبو حُذَيفة، حدثنا سفيان، عن أبيه، عن عِكْرمة، عن ابن عبَّاس، قولَه ﷿: ﴿وَحَنَانًا مِنْ لَدُنَّا﴾ [مريم: 13]، قال: التعطُّفُ بالرَّحمة (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "And tenderness from Us" [Surah Maryam: 13]; he said: "It means showing affection with mercy."
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل أبي حذيفة: وهو موسى بن مسعود النَّهدي، سفيان: هو ابن سعيد بن مسروق الثوري.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "hasan" because of Abu Hudhayfah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hudhayfah is Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi, and Sufyan is Ibn Sa'id bin Masruq al-Thawri.
وأخرجه البيهقي في "الأسماء والصفات" (141) عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (141) from al-Hakim, with this chain.
والخبر في "تفسير سفيان الثوري" لأبي حذيفة برقم (556) بلفظ: ما أدري ما هو إلَّا أن يكون تعطُّف الله على عبده بالرحمة.
Details of the narration: The report is in Abu Hudhayfah's "Tafsir Sufyan al-Thawri" (556) with the wording: "I do not know what it is, unless it is Allah's tender compassion towards His servant with mercy."
وروى الطبري في "تفسيره" 16/ 56 من طريق حجاج بن محمد، عن ابن جريج قال: أخبرني عمرو بن دينار أنه سمع عكرمة عن ابن عبَّاس قال: لا والله ما أدري ما حنانًا. كذا اختصره ولم يتمَّه!
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated in his "Tafsir" (16/ 56) via Hajjaj bin Muhammad, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: 'Amr bin Dinar informed me that he heard 'Ikrimah (narrate) from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "No, by Allah, I do not know what 'hanan' is." He abridged it like this and did not complete it!
