أخبرنا أبو العبَّاس محمد بن أحمد المَحبُوبي، حدثنا سعيد بن مسعود، أخبرنا يزيد بن هارون، وتلا ﴿فَلْيَعْمَلْ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا وَلَا يُشْرِكْ بِعِبَادَةِ رَبِّهِ أَحَدًا﴾، فقال: أخبرنا ابن أبي ذِئْب، عن بُكَير بن عبد الله بن الأَشجِّ، عن الوليد بن سَرْح (4)، عن أبي هريرة: أنَّ رجلًا قال: يا رسول الله، الرجلُ يجاهدُ في سبيل الله وهو يَبتَغي مِن عَرَضِ الدنيا! فقال رسول الله ﷺ: "لا أَجْرَ له"، فأعظَمَ الناسُ ذلك، فعاد الرجلُ، فقال: "لا أَجْرَ له" (5).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that (the narrator) recited this verse: "So let him do righteous deeds and not associate anyone in the worship of his Lord" [Surah al-Kahf: 110], and then related that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, a man fights in jihad in the path of Allah, but he (also, in his intention) seeks some of the goods of this world (spoils of war); (what is his ruling)?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no reward for him." The people found this very weighty, so the man repeated the same question, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "There is no reward for him."
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(4) تحرَّف في (ب) إلى: الوليد بن مسلم. والوليد بن سرح هذا لم نقف له على ترجمة.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) In manuscript (B) the name is distorted into "al-Walid bin Muslim", whereas it is "al-Walid bin Sarh", and we have not found a biography for this narrator.
(5) حديث حسن، وقد سلف عند المصنف برقم (2467) من طريق ابن المبارك عن أبي ذئب عن بُكير عن أيوب بن مكرز عن أبي هريرة، وهو المحفوظ. وانظر تمام الكلام عليه هناك. وأخرجه البيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (6422) عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.
Grading: (5) This hadith is "hasan". It has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (2467) via Ibn al-Mubarak, from Ibn Abi Dhi'b, from Bukayr, from Ayyub bin Mikraz, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and that is the "mahfuz" (preserved) chain.
