Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3440

It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas; he said: I asked my father (Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him): Does this saying of Allah Almighty, "Shall We inform you of those who are the greatest losers in respect of their deeds? They are those whose effort is lost in the life of this world, while they think that they are doing good work" [Surah al-Kahf: 103-104], refer to the Haruriyyah (the Khawarij)? He said: "No, it refers to the people of the hermitages (the monks). As for the Haruriyyah, they are a people who deviated (from the truth), so Allah caused their hearts to deviate."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the manuscripts it is written "unabbi'ukum" (in the singular), which is contrary to the recited text (of the Qur'an) and is not found in any of the readings.

Grading: (2) Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Nu'aym: al-Fadl bin Dukayn; Sufyan: al-Thawri; Ishaq: Ibn Rahawayh; Jarir: Ibn Abd al-Hamid; Mansur: Ibn al-Mu'tamir.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" (16/ 33) from Muhammad bin Humayd, from Jarir, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq in his "Tafsir" (1/ 413) and Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi (with al-Tabari: 16/ 32-33) narrated it in "abridged" form from Sufyan al-Thawri, inserting "Hilal bin Yisaf" between Mansur and Mus'ab.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir is not known for "tadlis"; perhaps he heard it from Hilal (from Mus'ab) and then heard it directly from Mus'ab as well, so he narrated it both ways, and Allah knows best. And Hilal bin Yisaf is "trustworthy" (thiqah).
