It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said that Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) met al-Khidr (peace be upon him), a bird came and put its beak into the water. Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him): Reflect on what this bird is saying. Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) asked: What is it saying? Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) said: This bird is saying that your knowledge and the knowledge of Musa, compared to the knowledge of Allah, is only as much as my beak has taken from this water."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it!

Grading: (1) Its chain is "sahih". Reference / Source: It was documented by al-Bukhari (3401, 4725, 4727), Muslim (2380/ 170), al-Tirmidhi (3149), Abdullah bin Ahmad in his "additions to the Musnad" (35/ 21114), al-Nasa'i (11245) and Ibn Hibban (6220), through various routes from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, with this chain - as part of a long hadith. Important point: So al-Hakim's treating it as an addition (mustadrak) is an "oversight" on his part. Reference / Source: And Abdullah bin Ahmad (21119) and al-Bukhari (4726) narrated it via Ibn Jurayj, from Ya'la bin Muslim and Amr bin Dinar, with the same chain and text. Reference / Source: And al-Nasa'i (11243) narrated it via Abdullah bin 'Ubayd al-Ansari, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, but he did not mention Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) in it and made it the hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
