Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3424

It is narrated from Silah bin Zufar that I heard Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) say concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station." [Surah al-Isra': 79] "The people will be gathered on a single plain; the voice of the caller will reach them all and the sight will reach them all; all barefoot and naked as they were created; all silent, and no soul will speak except with His permission." He said: "Then Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) will be called, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) will say: 'Labbayka wa sa'dayk, wal-khayru fi yadayk, wash-sharru laysa ilayk, al-mahdiyyu man hadayt, wa 'abduka bayna yadayk, wa laka wa ilayk, la malja'a wa la manja illa ilayk, tabarakta wa ta'alayt, subhana rabbil-bayt' (Here I am at Your service and ready to obey You; good is in Your Hands, and evil is not to be ascribed to You; the rightly guided is the one whom You have guided; Your servant stands before You; (all I have is) for You and returns to You; there is no refuge and no place of safety except with You; Blessed and Most High are You; glory be to the Lord of this House (the Ka'bah)). So this is the Praised Station about which Allah Almighty has said: 'It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.' [Surah al-Isra': 79]"
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it with this wording; however, Muslim recorded the hadith of Abu Malik al-Ashja'i, by way of Rib'i bin Hirash from Hudhayfah, only with the words: "They will surely be brought out of the Fire."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq is "Amr bin Abdullah al-Sabi'i".
Reference / Source: And Ibn Abi Shaybah documented it (11/ 484) and (13/ 378), and al-Harith bin Abi Usamah (1129 - Bughyat al-Bahith), through two routes from Isra'il, with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was documented by Abd al-Razzaq in his "Tafsir" (1/ 387), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Sunnah" (789), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Ahwal" (151), al-Nasa'i (11230), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (15/ 144-145), al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (1092, 1093), Ibn Mandah in "al-Iman" (930), and al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (2094, 2095), through various routes from Abu Ishaq, with the same chain and text.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In one of these routes the hadith came "marfu'" (the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) from its beginning, and it is the narration of Abdullah bin al-Mukhtar from Abu Ishaq (with Ibn Abi 'Asim and al-Lalaka'i). There is no harm in Abdullah bin al-Mukhtar (la ba'sa bihi), but he is "alone" among the trustworthy students of Abu Ishaq in narrating it as marfu'. Abu Hatim al-Razi said ("al-'Ilal": 5/ 504): "No one narrates this hadith as marfu' except Abdullah bin al-Mukhtar, and its being mawquf (the saying of a Companion) is more correct."
Note / Clarification: (The editors say): So he said, but he (may Allah have mercy on him) missed the narration of Layth bin Abi Sulaym, for he too narrated it from Abu Ishaq as marfu' (which will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number 8927), except that Layth is "da'if" (weak) and of poor memory.
Important point: However, (the principle is that) such a report cannot be said on the basis of personal opinion, so it must necessarily be marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And see the long hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) on "intercession" in al-Bukhari (3340, 4712) and Muslim (194).
Note / Clarification: The words "yunfiduhum al-basar" (with a dammah on the ya', from the four-letter form) mean: the sight will encompass them; and it has also been vocalised (with a fathah on the ya' and a dammah on the fa', from the three-letter form), meaning: the sight will pass right through them. See: "Fath al-Bari" (13/ 495).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) (Al-Hakim) attributed it to Muslim with this chain and these words, which is an "error" (wahm) on his part. Rather, Ahmad narrated it in his "Musnad" (38/ 23323) via Hammad bin Abi Sulayman, from Rib'i bin Hirash, from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A people will come out of the Fire after the Fire has scorched them; they will be called al-Jahannamiyyun."
Note / Clarification: As for the narration in Sahih Muslim (195) via Abu Malik al-Ashja'i, it is also about intercession, but this particular wording is not in it.
