It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both); he said: The people of Makkah demanded of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that Mount Safa be turned into gold for them, and that the mountains around them be removed so that they could cultivate there. So Allah Almighty said: "If you wish, We will give them what they ask; but if they still disbelieve, they will be destroyed just as I destroyed those before them. And if you wish, I will grant them respite; perhaps We will be forbearing with them (in punishment)." So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And nothing prevented Us from sending the signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a clear sign." [Surah al-Isra': 59]
