Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3418

It is narrated from Abu Ma'mar that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Some people among humans used to worship a group of jinn; then those jinn embraced Islam, but those humans kept to their worship of them. So Allah Almighty revealed these verses: 'Say: Call upon those whom you claim besides Him; they have no power to remove harm from you, nor to change it. Those whom they call upon themselves seek the means of access to their Lord, whichever of them is nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever to be feared.' [Surah al-Isra': 56-57]" Both of these verses are with "ya'".
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, and they did not record it!

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis" it is like this (with ya'), i.e. with two dots below; in manuscript (B) it is with "ba'", which is an error, while in (Z), (S) and ('A) it is with "ta'" (two dots above). From Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) a reading of the words of the Exalted "tad'un" with the "ta' of address" is reported, as in Abu Hayyan's "al-Bahr al-Muhit" (6/ 51).
Grading: In any case, this narration is "sahih" in terms of its chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan is Sufyan al-Thawri, al-A'mash is Sulayman bin Mihran, Ibrahim is Ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i, Abu Ma'mar is Abdullah bin Sakhbarah, and Abdullah is Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: It was documented - without explicit mention of the reading - by al-Bukhari (4714), Muslim (3030/ 29), and al-Nasa'i (11223) and (11225), through various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this chain.
Important point: So al-Hakim's mentioning it (as an addition, mustadrak) is an "oversight" on his part (since it is already in al-Bukhari and Muslim).
Reference / Source: And al-Bukhari documented it at (4715), Muslim at (3030), and al-Nasa'i at (11224), through two routes from al-A'mash, with the same chain and text.
Reference / Source: And Muslim narrated it at (3030/ 30) via Abdullah bin 'Utbah, from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), in similar form.
