It is narrated from Yahya bin al-Jazzar; he said: Abu al-Ubaydayn came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was a blind man; Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to hold him in regard. He asked: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! If we do not ask you, whom shall we ask?" Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What is your need?" He asked: "What is 'al-awwah'?" Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The compassionate." He asked: "What is 'al-ma'un'?" He said: "The things that people lend and give one another (such as items of common use)." He asked: "What is 'al-tabdhir' (squandering)?" He said: "Spending wealth where it has no right to be spent." He asked: "What is 'al-ummah'?" He said: "The one who teaches people good."
