It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have much wealth and a family and children. What is required of me, what I should do or how I should spend?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pay the obligatory zakah, for it will purify you; treat your relatives kindly; and recognise the right of the one who asks, of the neighbour and of the poor." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Make it less for me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then give the relatives, the poor and the travellers their right, and do not squander wastefully." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I pay the zakah to the envoy sent by the Messenger of Allah, have I then paid it to Allah and His Messenger?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes; when you have paid it to his (the Messenger's) envoy, you have paid it, and you will have its reward, and whoever alters it (from its due), the sin of it will be upon him."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The word "rasul" is present only in manuscript ('A), and it was written as a precaution (istizharan) in the margin of manuscript (S), while it has dropped out of (Z) and (B). Its inclusion is what is correct, as indicated by the narration of Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim from al-Layth, which is in the Musnad of Ahmad and elsewhere, for it contains the words: "When I have paid the zakat to your messenger..."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) Manuscript (Z) has the words "Rasul Allah", which is an error.
Grading: (3) Its chain is "da'if" (weak) because it is "munqati'" (broken). No hearing (sama') of Sa'id bin Abi Hilal from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) is known. Technical note / Defect ('illah): And Ibn Wahb in his book "al-Jami'" (200) - and via him al-Bayhaqi (4/ 97) - made clear that in this hadith there is an "unnamed intermediary" (an unknown narrator) between the two of them. Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi is Hisham bin Abd al-Malik. Reference / Source: Abu 'Ubayd documented it in "al-Nasikh wa-l-Mansukh" (46), Imam Ahmad (19/ 12394), and al-Harith bin Abi Usamah (288 - Bughyat al-Bahith), from Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim. Also al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (8802) via Abdullah bin Salih. Both of them (Abu al-Nadr and Abdullah bin Salih) narrate it from al-Layth bin Sa'd, with this chain.
