Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3394

أخبرنا أبو زكريا العَنبَري، حدثنا محمد بن عبد السلام، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم، أخبرنا جَرِير، عن الأعمش، عن أبي ظَبْيانَ، عن ابن عبَّاس في قوله ﷿: ﴿كَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَى الْمُقْتَسِمِينَ (90) الَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ﴾، قال: المقتسِمونَ: اليهودُ والنصارى، وقوله: ﴿جَعَلُوا الْقُرْآنَ عِضِينَ﴾، قال: آمَنوا ببعضٍ وكَفَروا ببعضٍ (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه! [16 - سورة النحل] ﷽

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "Just as We sent down upon those who divided, who have made the Qur'an into portions." [Surah al-Hijr: 90-91] He said: "'Al-Muqtasimin' (those who divided) means the Jews and the Christians. And concerning the saying of Allah, 'who have made the Qur'an into portions,' he said: They believed in part of it and disbelieved in part."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

(1) إسناده صحيح. جرير: هو ابن عبد الحميد، وأبو ظبيان: هو حُصين بن جندب الجَنَبي.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: Jarir: he is Ibn Abd al-Hamid, and Abu Zabyan: he is Husayn bin Jundub al-Janbi.
وأخرجه البخاري (4706) عن عُبيد الله بن موسى، عن الأعمش، بهذا الإسناد. فاستدراك الحاكم له ذهول منه.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (4706) narrated it from 'Ubaydullah bin Musa, from al-A'mash, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): So al-Hakim's including it as an addition (istidrak) is an oversight on his part.
وأخرجه أيضًا بنحوه برقم (3945) و (4705) من طريق سعيد بن جبير، عن ابن عبَّاس.
Reference / Source: And he (al-Bukhari) also narrated it in similar form at numbers (3945) and (4705), via Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas.
