Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3370

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): (Urwah bin al-Zubayr said:) I asked her about this saying of Allah Almighty: "Until, when the messengers despaired and thought that they had been lied to" [Surah Yusuf: 110]. I said: "Surely they had despaired, (thinking) that they had been denied" (and I read "kudhibu" lightly, without doubling the letter). She said: "I seek refuge in Allah! How could the messengers think such a thing of their Lord? Rather, these were the followers of the messengers: when help was delayed for them and the trial became severe upon them, the messengers thought that their followers had denied them."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets is from the printed edition; it had dropped out of our manuscripts, though it is indispensable.

Grading: This report is sahih from 'A'ishah, but this present chain is da'if because of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Waqid; however, he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: For al-Bukhari recorded it in a longer form than here in his "Sahih" (4695) from 'Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abd Allah al-Uwaysi, from Ibrahim bin Sa'd (Ibn Ibrahim bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf), with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Therefore al-Hakim's including it as a mustadrak is an oversight on his part.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari also recorded it (3389) through the route of 'Uqayl bin Khalid, and (4696) through the route of Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, both of them from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri in the same way.
Reference / Source: And he likewise recorded it at number (4525) through the route of Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr.
Note / Clarification: Reading "kudhdhibu" with the doubled consonant (as 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) used to recite it) is the reading of Ibn Kathir, Nafi', Abu 'Amr and Ibn 'Amir among the Seven Readers, while the Kufan readers recited it "kudhibu" without doubling. See "Fath al-Bari" (13/ 429).
