أخبرنا أبو زكريا يحيى بن محمد العنبري، حدثنا محمد بن عبد السلام، حدثنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم الحَنظَلي، أخبرنا عمرو بن محمد القُرشي، حدثنا خلَّاد بن مُسلِم الصَّفّار، عن عمرو بن قيس المُلَائي، عن عمرو بن مُرَّة، عن مصعب بن سعد، عن سعد في قول الله ﷿: ﴿نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ الْقَصَصِ﴾ الآية [يوسف: 3]، قال: نزل القرآنُ على رسول الله ﷺ فتَلَا عليهم زمانًا، فقالوا: يا رسول الله، لو قَصَصتَ علينا، فأنزل الله ﷿: ﴿الر تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ﴾ تلا إلى قوله: ﴿نَحْنُ نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ أَحْسَنَ الْقَصَصِ﴾ الآية [يوسف: 1 - 3]، فتَلَا عليهم زمانًا، فقالوا: يا رسولَ الله، لو حدَّثتَنا، فأنزل الله ﷿: ﴿اللَّهُ نَزَّلَ أَحْسَنَ الْحَدِيثِ كِتَابًا مُتَشَابِهًا﴾ الآيةَ [الزمر: 23]، كل ذلك يُؤمَر بالقرآن (2).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), regarding this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "We relate to you the best of stories" [Surah Yusuf: 3], that he said: When the Qur'an was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited it to them for a period of time. The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! If only you would narrate some stories to us." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed these verses: from "Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the clear Book" up to "We relate to you the best of stories". Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) related (this story) to them for a period of time. They said: "O Messenger of Allah! If only you would tell us some accounts." So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Allah has sent down the best of speech, a Book consistent in its parts" [Surah al-Zumar: 23]. Through all of this they were directed to the Qur'an itself.

(2) إسناده قوي من أجل خلاد بن مسلم الصفّار، ويقال: خلاد بن عيسى، وكنيته أبو مسلم. عمرو بن محمد القرشي: هو العنقزي، والقرشي ولاءً.
Grading: Its chain is strong (qawi) because of Khallad bin Muslim al-Saffar (who is also called Khallad bin 'Isa, and whose kunyah is Abu Muslim).
Note / Clarification: 'Amr bin Muhammad al-Qurashi: he is al-'Anqazi, and he is Qurashi by clientage (wala').
وأخرجه ابن حبان (6209) عن عبد الله بن محمد الأزدي، عن إسحاق بن إبراهيم - وهو الحنظلي ابن راهويه - بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6209) recorded it from 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad al-Azdi, from Ishaq bin Ibrahim (al-Hanzali, Ibn Rahwayh), with this same chain.
