Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3348

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever of this Ummah hears of me, whether he is a Jew or a Christian, and then does not believe in me, will enter the Fire (Hell)." (Ibn Abbas said:) I began saying to myself: Where is its confirmation in the Book of Allah? And it rarely happened that I heard a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without finding its explanation in the Qur'an, until I found this verse: "And whoever disbelieves in it from among the factions, the Fire is his promised place" [Surah Hud: 17]. He said: "The factions (al-ahzab)" means all the religions and creeds.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Ali bin al-Mubarak and his maternal uncle Zayd bin al-Mubarak are "hasan al-hadith" (fair in hadith), but they are not that strong in it. Zayd was contradicted in narrating it as "mawsul" (connected) from 'Abd al-Razzaq, for in "Tafsir 'Abd al-Razzaq" (1/ 303), in the narration of al-Hasan bin Yahya al-Jurjani from him, it comes as a "mursal" hadith of Sa'id bin Jubayr without mention of Ibn 'Abbas, and this is the "mahfuz" (preserved) version in the hadith of Ayyub.
Reference / Source: For al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (12/ 19) through the route of Muhammad bin Thawr, from Ma'mar, from Ayyub, from Sa'id, as mursal.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah (also with al-Tabari) and 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi (with al-Tabari and with Ibn Abi Hatim 6/ 2015) corroborated him in narrating it as mursal; both of them narrated it from Ayyub from Sa'id as mursal. And we have explained that the one who said "So I began to say" and so on is Sa'id bin Jubayr.
Important point: Sa'id bin Jubayr actually took this hadith (that is, the marfu' part) from the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari; this is how Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah narrated it from him.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (32/ 19536), al-Nasa'i (11177), Ibn Hibban (4880) and others recorded it through two routes from Abu Bishr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is "munqati'" (broken), because Sa'id bin Jubayr did not meet Abu Musa al-Ash'ari. The wording with Ibn Hibban is abridged in a way that impairs its meaning, and we have pointed this out in our commentary on "Musnad Ahmad".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The marfu' part of it has a supporting report (shahid) in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, found in Ahmad (13/ 8203 and 14/ 8609) and Muslim (153).
