Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3315

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the occasion of the Farewell Hajj, on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood between the Jamarat and asked the people: "What day is this?" The people said: "This is the Day of Sacrifice." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What city is this?" They said: "This is the Sacred City (Makkah)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What month is this?" They said: "This is the Sacred Month." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the day of the Greater Hajj. So your blood, your wealth and your honour are sacred to you, just as the sanctity of this city of yours on this day." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Have I conveyed (Allah's message)?" The people said: "Yes." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to say: "O Allah, bear witness." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) bade farewell to the people, and the people said: "This is the Farewell Hajj."
This hadith is sahih in its chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it with this wording. However, most of this text is found in the two Sahihs, except the saying "The day of the Greater Hajj is the Day of Sacrifice", because the statements of the Companions and the Successors differ on this: some of them said it is the Day of Arafah, and some said it is the Day of Sacrifice.

Grading: Its isnad is sahih.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1945) recorded it in very abridged form from Mu'ammal bin al-Fadl, from al-Walid bin Muslim, with this same isnad.
Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3058) recorded it in full by way of Sadaqah bin Khalid, from Hisham bin al-Ghaz, with this isnad.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari mentioned it in abridged form as mu'allaq (without a full chain) after (1742), by way of Hisham bin al-Ghaz.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from Abu Bakrah in Ahmad (34/ 20386), al-Bukhari (4406) and Muslim (1679).

Note / Clarification: By his word "musnadan" he means that it is marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

General principle: Al-Allamah Ibn al-Qayyim said in "Tahdhib Sunan Abi Dawud" (2/ 406): The Qur'an has stated explicitly that the proclamation was made "on the day of the greater Hajj", and there is no disagreement that this proclamation was made on the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr) at Mina. So this is decisive proof that the day of the greater Hajj is the Day of Sacrifice.
