It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hearing news is not like seeing with one's own eyes. Allah informed Musa (peace be upon him) that his people had made the calf (an object of worship), yet he did not throw down the Tablets; but when he saw with his own eyes what they had done, he threw down the Tablets (in anger)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is sahih; its narrators are all thiqah (trustworthy) to the last of them. Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, although Hushaym's narration from Abu Bishr Ja'far bin Abi Wahshiyyah, and his hearing from him, are well known, Ibn Adi said about this hadith of his: "It is said that he did not hear it from Abu Bishr; he only heard it from Abu Awanah, from Abu Bishr, and concealed that (tadlis)." We say: Abu Awanah - who is Waddah al-Yashkuri - is thiqah and thabt (firmly reliable), and his narration is with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (3476) and elsewhere by a route other than Hushaym's from him. So this is a defect that does not impair the hadith. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it (4/ (2447)) from Surayj bin al-Nu'man with this chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban recorded it (6213) by way of Surayj bin Yunus, from Hushaym, with the same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded the first part of it (3/ (1842)) from Hushaym with the same chain.
