Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3290

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Harun (peace be upon him) came upon al-Samiri while he was making the calf. He asked him: "What are you making?" He said: "Something that neither benefits nor harms." Harun (peace be upon him) said (as an imprecation): "O Allah, give him what he has asked of You (by intending it) in his heart." When he had gone, he said: "O Allah, I ask You that it should low." So it lowed. Thus, whenever anyone prostrated, the calf made a sound, and whenever anyone raised his head, it also made a sound. And that happened because of the supplication of Sayyiduna Harun (peace be upon him).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts (the name) is written "Amr", which is a mistake. It occurs correctly (i.e. "Umar") in several places in the author's (al-Hakim's) work.

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A) the place of "ma la" was left blank, and what we have established is taken from manuscript (B).

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets is not in our (manuscript) sources, but it is present in all the sources of takhrij.

Grading: Its isnad is hasan because of Simak bin Harb, and this report is mawquf.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Perhaps it is among the reports that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) took from the People of the Book.
Reference / Source: Yahya bin Sallam recorded it in his "Tafsir" (1/ 275) and Adam bin Abi Iyas in "Tafsir Mujahid" (1/ 400-401), both from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same isnad -
Details of the narration: and in both of their versions the wording is: "I make what harms and does not benefit."
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in his "Tafsir" - as in Tafsir Ibn Kathir (5/ 303) - by way of Yazid bin Harun, and Abu al-Hasan al-Khila'i in "al-Khila'iyyat" (427) by way of Hudbah bin Khalid; both of them from Hammad bin Salamah with this isnad.
Details of the narration: And in the narration of Yazid the wording is: "I make what harms and does not benefit."
