Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3282

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not call faces ugly," and then the narrator mentioned the rest of the hadith.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A) the name has been corrupted into "عمرو"; what we have put in the text is from (B) and "Talkhis al-Dhahabi", and it is correct.

Grading: Its narrators are all thiqah (trustworthy) to the last of them, except that Imam Ibn Khuzaymah, in his book "al-Tawhid" (1/ 87), declared this hadith of Ibn Umar - whose continuation is: "For Adam was created in the image of the Most Merciful" - defective for three reasons.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) The first: Sufyan al-Thawri contradicted al-A'mash in its chain and narrated it as mursal, without saying "from Ibn Umar" (and it is recorded by him, Ibn Khuzaymah). Al-Daraqutni also judged the mursal version correct in "al-'Ilal" (13/ 188). (2-3) The second and third: the 'an'anah (narrating with "from") of both al-A'mash and Habib bin Abi Thabit; al-A'mash did not state that he heard it from Habib, nor is it known that Habib heard it from Ata'.
Important point: See the rest of Ibn Khuzaymah's discussion of its meaning, for it is excellent.
Reference / Source: Al-Ajurri recorded it in "al-Shari'ah" (725), and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (14/ 101), by two routes from Ishaq bin Ibrahim (Ibn Rahawayh), with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim recorded it in "al-Sunnah" (517) and (518), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah in his "Musnad" (872 - Bughyat al-Bahith), Abd Allah bin Ahmad in "al-Sunnah" (498), Ibn Khuzaymah in "al-Tawhid" (1/ 85), al-Tabarani (13580), Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah al-Kubra" (7/ 244 and 260), al-Daraqutni in "al-Sifat" (45) and (48), al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (716), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (640), by various routes from Jarir bin Abd al-Hamid, with the same chain.
Details of the narration: Except that in two narrations of these routes from Jarir, with Ibn Abi Asim and al-Daraqutni, it reads "على صورته" (in his image), with the pronoun of the absent third person.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has been narrated by several routes from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "When one of you fights his brother, let him avoid the face, for Allah created Adam in his image" (with the pronoun of the absent third person).
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it (12/ (7323)), and Muslim (2612), and others. See its routes in the takhrij of "Musnad Ahmad".
Note / Clarification: There is disagreement over whom the pronoun in "صورته" refers to. See "Fath al-Bari" (8/ 167 - 168, hadith 2559, and 10/ 13, hadith 3326).
