أخبرَناه أبو العبَّاس المحبُوبي، حدثنا أحمد بن سيَّار، حدثنا محمد بن كَثير، حدثنا سفيان، عن حبيب بن أبي ثابت، عمَّن سمع ابنَ عبَّاس يقول في قول الله ﷿: ﴿وَهُمْ يَنْهَوْنَ عَنْهُ وَيَنْأَوْنَ عَنْهُ﴾، قال: نزلت في أبي طالب، كان ينهى المشركين أن يُؤْذُوه ويَنْأَى عنه (3). حديث حمزة عن حبيب صحيحٌ على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And they forbid (others) from him and keep away from him themselves" that he said: This verse was revealed concerning Abu Talib. He used to forbid the idolaters from harming him (peace and blessings be upon him), while he himself kept away from him (peace and blessings be upon him).
The narration of Hamzah from Habib is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(3) إسناده ضعيف لإبهام الواسطة بين حبيب وابن عبَّاس. سفيان: هو الثوري.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because the intermediary between Habib and Ibn Abbas is unnamed.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan is al-Thawri.
وأخرجه البيهقي في "الدلائل" 2/ 340 عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.

ومن طريق سفيان أخرجه أيضًا أبو حذيفة النهدي في "تفسير سفيان" (264)، وعبد الرزاق في "تفسيره" 1/ 206، والطبري في "تفسيره" 7/ 173، وكذا ابن أبي حاتم 4/ 1276 - 1277.
Reference / Source: By way of Sufyan it was also recorded by Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi in "Tafsir Sufyan" (264), Abd al-Razzaq in his "Tafsir" (1/ 206), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (7/ 173), and likewise Ibn Abi Hatim (4/ 1276 - 1277).
وتابع سفيانَ على هذه الرواية بإبهام الواسطة: قيسُ بن الربيع عند الطبري 7/ 173، وابن عساكر 66/ 323، وذُكر قيس عند الطبري بكنيته وهي أبو محمد الأسدي. ووقعت روايته عند الطبراني في "الكبير" (12682) بإسقاط الواسطة المبهمة. وقيس بن الربيع فيه ضعف. وتابعهما حماد بن شعيب عند سعيد بن منصور في التفسير من "سننه" (874). وحماد هذا ضعيف.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Sufyan was corroborated in this narration, with the unnamed intermediary, by Qays bin al-Rabi' with al-Tabari (7/ 173) and Ibn Asakir (66/ 323) (with al-Tabari, Qays is mentioned by his kunyah, "Abu Muhammad al-Asadi"). In al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (12682) his narration occurs with the unnamed intermediary dropped. Qays bin al-Rabi' has some weakness. Both of them were corroborated by Hammad bin Shu'ayb with Sa'id bin Mansur in the Tafsir section of his "Sunan" (874), and this Hammad is weak.
