It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And they forbid (others) from him and keep away from him themselves" [Surah al-An'am: 26] that he said: This verse was revealed concerning Abu Talib. He used to prevent the idolaters from harming the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but he himself kept away from the (religion) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had brought.

Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because of the weakness of Muhammad bin Mandah al-Asbahani, and Bakr bin Bakkar is also not that strong. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Dala'il" (2/ 340 - 341), al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (426), and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (66/ 323), by way of Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this chain.
