It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Quraysh said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Supplicate to your Lord to turn (the hill of) Safa into gold for us, and we will believe in you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you (really) do so?" They said: "Yes." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated to Allah, and Jibril (peace be upon him) came and said: "Your Lord sends you greetings of peace and says: If you wish, Safa will become gold for them, but after that whoever of them disbelieves, I will punish him with a punishment with which I have not punished anyone in the worlds; and if you wish, I will open for them the doors of repentance and mercy." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O my Lord! The door of repentance and mercy (is better)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
