Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3265

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Surah al-An'am was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah), then he said: "Indeed, so many angels accompanied this surah that they filled the horizon."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, for its narrator Isma'il is this very al-Suddi, and Imam Bukhari did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This is how it is in the manuscripts (and likewise in the source manuscripts of al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" 2208, where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim)), with the "waw" retained as the sign of a masculine plural subject; this is the dialect of some Arabs, who say: "أكلوني البراغيث". The standard usage (al-jaddah) is "سدَّ" (in the singular).

Grading: It is utterly weak. The author (al-Hakim) held that this Isma'il bin Abd al-Rahman is al-Suddi, but al-Dhahabi objected to him in his "Talkhis", saying: "No, by Allah, Ja'far did not meet al-Suddi, and I think this is fabricated (mawdu')." Ibn Hajar commented on these words of al-Dhahabi in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" (3/ 230), saying: "Perhaps he means meeting him to hear from him, not living in his time, for Ja'far was born in 109 AH (and it is said 119 AH), and al-Suddi died in 129 AH, so on either estimate he could have heard from him, especially as both were in one city (meaning Basra). But Ja'far only began seeking knowledge after 140 AH. What has become clear to me is that the name Isma'il got confused for some of its narrators, for Abd bin Humayd (one of the precise hafiz scholars) recorded this same hadith in his "Tafsir" from the aforementioned Ja'far bin Awn, saying: 'From Musa bin Ubaydah, from Muhammad bin al-Munkadir', and he mentioned it as mursal without Jabir in it, and this is more likely."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: This mursal route was also narrated by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (2209) by way of Abu Uthman al-Basri (the exemplary imam Amr bin Abd Allah bin Dirham), from Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab, from Ja'far bin Awn, from Musa bin Ubaydah, with the same chain. So in the narration of Muhammad bin Abd al-Wahhab too, the hadith goes back to Musa bin Ubaydah; this Musa is al-Rabadhi, and the majority hold him to be weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a mawquf shahid (supporting report) from the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) with al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (6447) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (2210).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain contains Abu Bakr Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Salimi, whose condition is not known, and Umar bin Talhah al-Laythi, who is not that strong.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Another (shahid) is from the hadith of Asma' bint Yazid, mawquf; al-Khila'i recorded it in his "Fawa'id" (and by way of him Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" 3/ 228 - 229). It is from the narration of Layth bin Abi Sulaym, from Shahr bin Hawshab, from Asma'; Layth and Shahr are both weak. It is with Ishaq bin Rahawayh in his "Musnad" (2298), but he made it a mursal narration of Layth from Shahr; so this is another defect of the hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A third (shahid) is from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), also mawquf, with Ibn al-Durays in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (196) and (201), with two weak chains; the second of them contains Shahr bin Hawshab, who narrates munkar (objectionable) reports.
Note / Clarification: We say: Despite all this, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar" took the view that these reports are hasan through one another, and we consider that leniency on his part (may Allah have mercy on him). And Allah Most High knows best.
