It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that he had an elderly wife, and he married a young woman in addition to her and began to prefer the virgin over his first wife. His first wife refused to accept this, so he gave her one divorce, until, when her waiting period was close to ending, he said: "If you wish, I will take you back on the condition that you bear patiently with this preference (unequal treatment), and if you wish, I will leave you until your waiting period is complete." She said: "Rather, take me back and I will bear it patiently." So he took her back, but she could not again bear this preference patiently, so he gave her the second divorce and preferred the young wife. The narrator said: This is the settlement concerning which it reached us that Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And if a woman fears ill-treatment or aversion from her husband, there is no sin upon them both if they make a settlement between themselves" [Surah an-Nisa: 128].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. 5/ 309. Reference / Source: It is in "Tafsir Abd al-Razzaq" (1/ 175) and in his "Musannaf" (10653). In the "Musannaf" it is in mursal form: "From Sa'id bin al-Musayyib and Sulayman bin Yasar, that Rafi' bin Khadij had a wife..." Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Sa'id and Sulayman are both known to narrate from Rafi', and they heard from him. In any case, the mursal reports of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib are among the most authentic of mursal reports, and the majority accept them as proof. By way of Abd al-Razzaq, al-Tabari recorded it, like the "Musannaf" version, in his "Tafsir" (5/ 309). Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded something similar in his "Tafsir" (4/ 1081) by way of Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id and Sulayman: that Rafi' bin Khadij... etc. Reference / Source: Something similar was also recorded by al-Shafi'i in "al-Umm" (6/ 481), Sa'id bin Mansur in the Tafsir section of his "Sunan" (701), Ibn Abi Shaybah (4/ 202), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (7/ 75 and 296) and "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (14501), and al-Wahidi in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (370) and "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" (2/ 124), by way of Sufyan bin Uyaynah, from al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib alone: that the daughter of Muhammad bin Maslamah was married to Rafi' bin Khadij... and he mentioned something similar. Reference / Source: Likewise Malik recorded it in "al-Muwatta" (2/ 548 - 549) from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Rafi' bin Khadij: that he married the daughter of Muhammad bin Maslamah al-Ansari... etc. But he did not mention in it the revelation of the verse. Note / Clarification: His words "قد خلا من سِنِّها" mean: years of her life had passed; that is, she had grown old.
