It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Marwan sent a message to him: By Allah, if every one of us who rejoiced in what he was given and wished to be praised for what he did not do were to be punished, we would all be punished! At this Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "This verse was revealed concerning the People of the Book. (What happened was that) the Jews came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them about something, but they concealed it. Then they came again, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, they told him something false. They left (from there) making it appear that they had told him (peace and blessings be upon him) everything he had asked about, and they sought praise for that and rejoiced at what they had done in concealing from him (peace and blessings be upon him) the truth about which he had asked them."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is da'if because of Muhammad bin Abd al-Malik, for he is majhul (unknown), no one but Rawh bin Ubadah having narrated from him; but he has been corroborated on this hadith of his. Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/ (2712)), al-Bukhari (4568 M), Muslim (2778), al-Tirmidhi (3014), and al-Nasa'i (11020) recorded it by way of Hajjaj bin Muhammad, from Abd al-Malik bin Jurayj, with this chain; Important point: so al-Hakim's including it as an addition (istidrak) is an oversight on his part. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd al-Razzaq in his "Tafsir" (1/ 141 - 142) and Hisham bin Yusuf al-San'ani with al-Bukhari (4568) differed: they narrated it from Abd al-Malik bin Jurayj, from Ibn Abi Mulaykah, from Alqamah bin Waqqas, that "Marwan", etc. This difference does no harm, for Humayd and Alqamah are both thiqah senior Successors. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "al-Fath" (13/ 156) held it possible that both of them were present with Ibn Abbas when he answered, that Ibn Abi Mulaykah took it from both of them together and narrated it to Ibn Jurayj from each of them, so Ibn Jurayj narrated it sometimes from this one and sometimes from that one. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
