It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every prophet has guardians (wulah) from among the prophets, and my guardians among them are my father and my intimate friend, Ibrahim (peace be upon him)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Indeed, the people most worthy of Ibrahim are those who followed him, and this Prophet, and those who have believed; and Allah is the Ally of the believers." [Surah Al Imran: 68]
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

(501). Grading: Its chain is sahih, if Allah wills. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over it from Sufyan bin Sa'id (al-Thawri) regarding the mention of Masruq bin al-Ajda': a group, among them Yahya al-Qattan, Ibn Mahdi and Waki', narrated it from him as munqati' without mentioning Masruq in it. Muhammad bin 'Ubayd was corroborated in narrating it as connected by Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, Abu Nu'aym (in the narration of Ahmad bin Muhammad al-Qadi from him, as will come with the author under no. 4074), Rawh bin 'Ubadah (as Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned in "al-'Ilal" 1677), and others. What favours the narration of those who connected it by mentioning Masruq is that Abu al-Ahwas Sallam bin Sulaym (who is thiqah and meticulous) narrated it as connected too, from Sa'id bin Masruq, the father of Sufyan al-Thawri, in what Sa'id bin Mansur recorded from him in the Tafsir section of his "Sunan" (501). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tirmidhi, and the two Razis Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah, held that the narration of those who narrated it from Sufyan as munqati' is to be preferred, and on that basis its chain was judged weak in "Musnad Ahmad" 6/(3800), and Allah the Exalted knows best. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in 6/(3800) and al-Tirmidhi (2995 m) via Waki'; Ahmad in 7/(4088) from Yahya al-Qattan and Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi; and al-Tirmidhi (2995) via Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri; all four from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain. Al-Zubayri alone mentioned Masruq in it.
