It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out holding a staff in his hand. There were bunches of dates (given in charity) hanging there, one of which was a bunch of poor, dried-up dates (hashaf). He (peace and blessings be upon him) struck that bunch with the staff and said: "What harm would it have done the giver of this charity if he had given something better than this? Indeed the owner of these dates will be given poor, dried-up dates to eat on the Day of Resurrection." Then he said: "By Allah, you will leave these orchards for forty years to the 'awafi.'" Then he said: "Do you know what the 'awafi' are?" They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The birds and the beasts of prey."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: What is between the square brackets has dropped out of the printed edition, and in its place in manuscripts (Z) and (S) there is a blank space; we have supplied it from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 4/136, where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim) with his chain and text.
6/ 228. Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Salih bin Abi 'Arib, and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared it sahih in "al-Fath" 6/228. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu 'Asim al-Nabil is al-Dahhak bin Makhlad. Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban recorded it (6774) via 'Amr bin Abi 'Asim al-Nabil, from his father, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in 39/(23976) and (23998), Abu Dawud (1608), Ibn Majah (1821) and al-Nasa'i (2284), via two routes from Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far, with the same chain. Details of the narration: It will come under no. (8515) via Abu Qilabah, from Abu 'Asim. Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar made a mistake in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (16052) by treating the two places in al-Hakim as having this one chain, whereas the correct position is that they have two chains, and there is some variation in their wording.
