It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that one sa' of dates be given as Sadaqat al-Fitr. A man brought poor-quality dates, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do not assess these dates (as zakah)." Then this verse of the Qur'an was revealed: "O you who believe! Spend from the good things you have earned and from what We have brought forth for you from the earth, and do not aim for the inferior part of it to spend (in the way of Allah)" [Surah al-Baqarah: 267].
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft, somewhat weak);
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hatim bin Isma'il, although trustworthy overall, was criticised by Ibn al-Madini for his hadiths from Ja'far bin Muhammad (who is Ibn 'Ali bin al-Husayn, nicknamed al-Sadiq). He said: He narrated from Ja'far, from his father, mursal hadiths which he made musnad (connected). And Ahmad said: They claimed that Hatim had some inattentiveness. As for Qays bin Unayf, a group narrated from him and no criticism or commendation of him has been reported, but he has been corroborated in the body of the hadiths he narrated, so he is acceptable (salih) and hasan in hadith, if Allah wills.
Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi recorded it in "Asbab al-Nuzul" (172) via Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Nu'aym (who is al-Hakim), with this same chain.
