It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked him: O Abu Umarah, does this saying of Allah Almighty, "And do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands" [Surah al-Baqarah: 195], refer to the man who meets the enemy army and fights until he is martyred? He replied: "No, rather it refers to the man who commits a sin and then (in despair) says: Allah will never forgive me now."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
