It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about faith, and he recited this verse: "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but righteousness is (in) one who believes in Allah and the Last Day" [Surah al-Baqarah: 177], until he completed the whole verse. He asked again and he recited it again; he asked again and he recited it again. Then he asked him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you do a good deed and your heart loves it, and when you do an evil deed and your heart hates it (then know that you are a believer)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(8495). Note / Clarification: There is a blank space here in the manuscripts, and in its place there must be two generations (tabaqat) between the narrators, as occurs in other places with the author (al-Hakim); see (7200), (8262), (8263) and (8495).
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak) because of disconnection (inqita'), since Mujahid did not hear from Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him), and al-Dhahabi also declared it defective due to disconnection in his "Talkhis". Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in his "Tafsir" 1/ 287 via the route of Amir bin Shafi, from Abd al-Karim bin Malik al-Jazari, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ma'mar recorded it in abridged form (without the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) statement at its end) in his "Jami'" (20110) from Abd al-Karim al-Jazari with this same chain. Via his route al-Marwazi recorded it in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (409), al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (1197), al-Ajurri in "al-Shari'ah" (251), and Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah al-Kubra" 2/ 772 and 798. Ibn Battah recorded something similar to the longer narration in 2/ 772 - 773 via the route of al-Qasim bin Abd al-Rahman al-Mas'udi, from Abu Dharr. Technical note / Defect ('illah): This too is disconnected (munqati') between al-Qasim and Abu Dharr.
