حدثنا إسماعيل بن محمد الفقيه بالرَّيّ، حدثنا محمد بن الفَرَج الأزرق، حدثنا أبو النَّضْر، حدثنا شُعبة، عن منصور. وأخبرني أبو بكر محمد بن عبد الله الشافعي ببغداد، حدثنا إسحاق بن الحسن، حدثنا أبو حُذيفة، حدثنا سفيان، عن منصور، عن زُبَيد عن مُرَّة بن شَراحِيل، عن عبد الله بن مسعود في قول الله ﷿: ﴿وَآتَى الْمَالَ عَلَى حُبِّهِ ذَوِي الْقُرْبَى﴾ [البقرة: 177]، قال: يعطي الرجلَ وهو صحيحٌ شَحِيح، يَأمُل العيشَ ويخاف الفقرَ (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, "And gives wealth, despite love for it, to relatives" [Surah al-Baqarah: 177], that he said: (It means that) a man gives wealth in charity while he is healthy and has greed for wealth in his heart, hoping for a long life and fearing poverty and hardship.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(1) إسناده صحيح. أبو النضر: هو هاشم بن القاسم، وأبو حذيفة: هو موسى بن مسعود النهدي، وسفيان: هو الثوري، ومنصور: هو ابن المعتمر، وزبيد: هو ابن الحارث الياميّ.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Nadr refers to 'Hashim bin al-Qasim', Abu Hudhayfah refers to 'Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi', Sufyan refers to 'al-Thawri', Mansur refers to 'Ibn al-Mu'tamir', and Zubayd refers to 'Ibn al-Harith al-Yami'.
وأخرجه النَّسَائِي (11847) من طريق عبد الله بن المبارك، عن شعبة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i recorded it in (11847) via the route of Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Shu'bah, with this same chain.
وأخرجه عبد الرزاق في "مصنفه" (16324) و "تفسيره" 1/ 66 عن سفيان الثوري، به.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in his "Musannaf" (16324) and "Tafsir" 1/ 66 from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain.
ويشهد له دون ذكر الآية حديث أبي هريرة مرفوعًا عند البخاري (1419) ومسلم (1032).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Without mention of the verse, it is supported (as a shahid) by the marfu' hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), which is in al-Bukhari (1419) and Muslim (1032).
صحيح، أي: ليس فيه مرض أو علّة تقطع أمله في الحياة.
Note / Clarification: (The word) "sahih" means: one who has no illness or ailment that would cut off his hope of living (i.e. healthy).
وشحيح، أي حريص على ماله، جامع له.
