Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3112

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Do not revile the wind, for it is from the breath of the Most Merciful (that is, His relief and mercy), as Allah says: "And the directing of the winds and the clouds held between the heaven and the earth" [Surah al-Baqarah: 164]. Rather, supplicate: 'Allahumma inna nas'aluka min khayri hadhihi al-rih, wa khayri ma ursilat bihi, wa na'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma ursilat bihi' (O Allah, we ask You for the good of this wind and the good with which it has been sent, and we seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil with which it has been sent).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it; and this hadith has also been narrated from Habib bin Abi Thabit through other chains.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It has also been narrated marfu', as will come later, and that is what is preserved (mahfuz). Ishaq bin Ibrahim refers to 'Ibn Rahawayh' and Jarir refers to 'Ibn Abd al-Hamid'.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i recorded something similar in (10706) from Ishaq bin Ibrahim with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Jarir was corroborated in narrating it as mawquf by Abu Awanah from al-A'mash, which is also in al-Nasa'i (10705).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The two of them (Jarir and Abu Awanah) were contradicted by Asbat bin Muhammad (in Abd Allah bin Ahmad's additions to "al-Musnad" 35/ 21138 and in al-Nasa'i 10703), and also by Muhammad bin Fudayl (in Ahmad 21139, al-Tirmidhi 2252 and al-Nasa'i 10704); both of these narrated it from al-A'mash as marfu'. In the narration of Muhammad bin Fudayl in Abd Allah bin Ahmad it has: "For indeed it is from the rawh (mercy) of Allah", and this has the meaning of "from the nafas of the Most Merciful", i.e.: from His mercy and His granting of relief and ease to His servants.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Shu'bah narrated it from Habib bin Abi Thabit, and there is also disagreement over him (Shu'bah) as to whether it is marfu' or mawquf: Sahl bin Hammad narrated it from him as marfu' in al-Nasa'i (10707), while Muhammad bin Abi Adi (10708) and al-Nadr bin Shumayl (10709) narrated it from him as mawquf.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its being marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that will come later at number (7962),
Grading: and its chain is sahih.
Details of the narration: And see the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that is coming later at number (3782).
