Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3110

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty, "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" [Surah al-Baqarah: 158], that he said: In the Jahiliyyah, the devils used to play music the whole night between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and their idols were also placed there. When Islam came, the Muslims said: O Messenger of Allah, we will not go between al-Safa and al-Marwah, for it is something we used to do in the Jahiliyyah. Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: whoever performs Hajj or Umrah, there is no sin upon him for going between them. That is, it means there is no burden of sin upon him; rather, there is reward for him.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Suddi refers to 'Isma'il bin Abd al-Rahman', and Abu Malik's name is 'Ghazwan al-Ghifari'.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded something similar in his "Tafsir" 2/ 46 - 47 from Musa bin Harun al-Hamdani, from Amr bin Talhah al-Qannad, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Dawud recorded it in "al-Masahif" (318) via the route of Amir bin al-Furat, and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" 1/ 267 via the route of Amr bin Muhammad al-Anqazi, both from Asbat bin Nasr with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: Regarding the word "تعزف", Ibn al-Athir said in "al-Nihayah": 'Azif al-jinn' means their sounds or hum (jars); it is said that it is a sound heard at night like a drum; and it is also said that it is the sound of the winds in the air, which the desert people imagine to be the voice of the jinn; and 'azif al-riyah' is the roar that is heard from the wind.
