It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the saying of Allah, "So turn your face towards (shatr) al-Masjid al-Haram" [Surah al-Baqarah: 144], that he said: "Shatrahu" means its direction (the qiblah).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Imam Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts of "al-Mustadrak" the name is (عُمير بن زياد), whereas what we have retained (in the text) is from "Sunan al-Bayhaqi", where he narrated it from the author (al-Hakim), and it is the same in the biographical books (books of narrators): (عَميرة) with the addition of the round ta' (ة) at its end. It is also said that his name is Umayrah bin Kawhan, as in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 7/ 96. This Umayrah narrates from Ali and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both), and Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i and Talhah bin Musarrif narrate from him, as in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 7/ 24; and al-Ijli and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah (trustworthy).
Grading: Its chain is 'hasan', if Allah wills, because of Umayrah bin Ziyad al-Kindi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Muthanna refers to 'Mu'adh bin al-Muthanna al-Anbari', Sufyan refers to 'al-Thawri', and Abu Ishaq refers to 'Amr bin Ubayd al-Sabi'i'. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in 2/ 3 from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" 2/ 22, Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" 1/ 254, and al-Dinawari in "al-Mujalasah" (1461), via the route of Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq, with this same chain.
